Self-Awareness Is The Key To Your Success

Self-awareness and self-realization is the first step to effective communication.

You cannot influence others with your ideas unless you are self-aware and have a good understanding of your personality type and why you react in the way that you do. All too often, we see brilliant people who have the potential to advance in an organization hindered by their own ignorance of their abilities.

Our lives improve only when we take chances, and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves. ~Walter Anderson

Self-Concept and Why it Matters

Self-Concept is a person’s image about himself. It is how you perceive yourself and your abilities, and how you think you are with others.

A person with a good self-concept is someone whose perception of themself is based on reality. For example, a manager who thinks of himself as a champion but who, in reality, has done nothing to improve the organization or his team is simply dismissed as a show-off. Anything he says will not be taken seriously and his intentions will always be doubted as self-promotion.

On the other end of the spectrum is the worker who is responsible for many wonderful ideas that benefit the team, but sees herself as nothing but just another cog in the wheel. She will be too shy to participate in discussions and too cautious to share his ideas, depriving himself and the company of great opportunities.

We believe that a person’s self-concept is developed by his or her environment. If you are immersed in an environment where you are only appreciated for huge achievements, you may develop a fear of your own weaknesses and try to mask them with self-conceit. There is also the risk that you may become so self-conscious of those weaknesses that you fail to see your strengths. Either way you end up with a distorted self-concept that is confusing not only to you but to the people around you as well.

Getting to Know Yourself

Knowing yourself is the key to improving yourself. You need to be aware of your weaknesses and strengths. You have to be perceptive of where your ‘buttons’ are – events, objects, ideas, and people who trigger various reactions from you. You may work better under pressure while others need to be more deliberate. Understanding your personality style is key to understanding who you are as a person, and why you react the way that you do.

We all learn differently – some learn faster through specific guidance, while some learn better through self-exploration. It’s a simple fact that we all have different personalities and need different triggers for self-development. This is one of the huge benefits of DiSC® personality workshops, they provide multiple learning mechanisms to allow all learning styles to develop quickly. As you learn more about your personality, you become more accepting of your unique traits and learn to respect the personalities of others.

Self-awareness Spells Success

Great leaders are believable because they are real. They know and accept their weaknesses but they are also aware of what they can and want to do.

Successful companies know that their achievements are only as good as their most valuable asset – their people. This is why they invest in personality training which allow employees to understand themselves and their teammates better. Personality styles training courses provide fun and interactive activities aimed at helping individuals understand their personality styles and how to effectively work together in the middle of diversity.
